About The Iron Rail Inn

A Landmark of Railroad History—Reimagined for Today’s Traveler

A cozy shop interior with wooden floors, green shelves stocked with various items, and warm lighting from track lights and a round lamp—perfect for hotel guests exploring the charm of Chama.

Nestled in the heart of Chama, New Mexico, The Iron Rail Inn stands directly opposite the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad depot. Our building has welcomed passengers, rail workers, and adventurers for more than a century. After a meticulous top-to-bottom renovation completed in 2025, the inn now pairs authentic railroad‑era character with the comforts modern guests expect.

Our Story in Three Stops

1890s – The Steam Era
Chama thrives as a vital rail hub for timber, sheep, and coal. The future inn is constructed as crew lodging—simple rooms, sturdy bones, and a front porch facing the tracks.

1950s – Quiet Years
Passenger rail wanes, the building changes hands, and its original charm is hidden beneath quick fixes.

2023–2025 – Full Restoration
Local owners acquire the property and launch a two‑year restoration. Original hardwood floors are uncovered, vintage fixtures rewired, and every guest room receives new tile baths, premium mattresses, and high‑speed fiber internet. The ground floor becomes the Iron Rail Bar & Grill and a cozy lobby coffee bar.
